Canadian Dental Care Plan | How It Works
The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is designed to improve access to dental care for Canadians by combining public coverage with private insurance where applicable. While children often receive basic dental care under provincial health plans, adults generally rely on private insurance or out-of-pocket payments. The CDCP helps bridge this gap by providing coverage for low- and middle-income individuals and families.
The plan covers preventive services such as cleanings and check-ups, as well as more extensive treatments like fillings and extractions. While the program aims to improve affordability and access, some services may still require co-payments or partial payment, especially for specialized treatments.

What Does The Canadian Dental Care Plan Cover?
The CDCP provides a wide range of oral health services, including:
- Preventive Care: Cleanings, fluoride treatments, sealants to protect against cavities, and check-ups.
- Diagnostic Services: Examinations, x-rays, and assessments.
- Restorative Services: Fillings, root canal treatments, and dentures.
- Periodontal Services: Gum disease treatments like deep scaling and abscess care.
- Oral Surgery: Extractions, and surgical care for conditions such as tumors or jaw fractures.
- Orthodontic Services: Limited coverage, available under strict medical criteria.
Some services may require preauthorization to confirm eligibility, and patients should be aware that the CDCP has its own fee schedule, which may differ from provincial fee guides. In some cases, individuals may need to cover additional out-of-pocket costs.
